Waiting Game

Hello, everybody. Apologies for having gone so long without providing an update. As some of you may know, last year was a bit hectic as I relocated to London, England, for my wife’s job. (As a side note, it would be interesting to plot out all the different places that Antonio’s descendants have lived!)

So here’s where things stand:

  • The historical marker was approved in January 2019.
  • Thanks to everyone’s generosity, together we raised and submitted the $1,875 payment for the marker by the deadline in March 2019.
  • In October, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) provided us with a proposed marker inscription to review.
  • Since then, we’ve been going back and forth with them to correct errors, and we expect to have the inscription finalized soon, if it’s not already.
  • That said, we’re likely still several months away from receiving the marker. The THC notified us last July that the company they’d been using to produce the markers for more than 50 years had been sold and was no longer taking new orders (see news article). They found a new foundry in January 2020 and are getting back on track with marker production, and will be working to deliver the 2019 markers (like ours) over the next eight months (see notice).
  • Once the historical marker is delivered, the goal is to plan a marker dedication ceremony. We’ll be putting out another call for contributions of labor and/or money to help fund that, when the time comes.

Stay tuned!
