Order and pay by June 15 to avoid missing out on a copy of the keepsake cemetery history book
Over the last year we’ve been slowly working on putting together a little keepsake book to document the history of the Antonio López Cemetery (aka, San José Cemetery), from its creation in 1903 through to the recent beautification project and installation of the historical marker. The book is nearly ready for printing. Its roughly 100…

The marker is in! And IN!

Our family cemetery marker arrived in San José yesterday, and no time was wasted in installing it. Chico López, Beto Peña, and Eladio Barrera wrangled the 125-pound cast-aluminum marker, setting it in cement just inside the main gate where it will be seen by all as they first enter the cemetery and won’t become surrounded…

Our marker has been cast!

It’s hard to believe it’s been over three years since we first got the ball rolling on an historical marker for our family cemetery, but we’ve finally gotten word that it’s done: our official marker is cast and ready for shipment! The Texas Historical Commission graciously sent this photo of our finished marker at the…

Our marker is being cast!

Good news, y’all, the Texas Historical Commission notified us that our turn has finally come up, and our historic-cemetery marker has been sent to the foundry for casting. We can expect to receive the marker in roughly 6–8 weeks, depending on the foundry’s workload—and of course, we’re all familiar with the risks of pandemic-related delays…

Still waiting…
Seems like it’s been a year of waiting, between the pandemic and the presidential election, so it’ll come as no surprise that we’re also still waiting for our cemetery marker. We’ve had an update from the Texas Historical Commission, and it sounds like it’s going to be at least another 4 months. There are about…

Waiting Game
Hello, everybody. Apologies for having gone so long without providing an update. As some of you may know, last year was a bit hectic as I relocated to London, England, for my wife’s job. (As a side note, it would be interesting to plot out all the different places that Antonio’s descendants have lived!) So…

Our historical marker has been approved! Can you pitch in for the $1,875 needed by March 1?

We just got word that the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has approved an official historical marker for the cemetery. Congratulations, everyone! Our application was one of only 185 selected statewide for 2019, out of 236 applications received. This will put our special piece of history “on the books” curated by the THC, and the marker…

It’s official: we have Historic Texas Cemetery designation!

Thanks to everyone who put in the time and effort to get the Antonio López Family Cemetery designated and registered as an Historic Texas Cemetery! (See the official documents.) We’re already in the Texas Historic Sites Atlas and everything! Next steps: Work continues on the application and documentation to clear the higher bar for the higher-profile…

The application has been submitted for Historic Texas Cemetery status!

On 4/25/18, the application was submitted for Historic Texas Cemetery designation for the Antonio López Family Cemetery. Chances seem pretty good for the cemetery to be approved sometime in the next several months, and once it is, we can pursue the more lengthy and rigorous application for a historical marker. Many thanks to everyone who helped…
