Our historical marker has been approved! Can you pitch in for the $1,875 needed by March 1?

We just got word that the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has approved an official historical marker for the cemetery. Congratulations, everyone! Our application was one of only 185 selected statewide for 2019, out of 236 applications received. This will put our special piece of history “on the books” curated by the THC, and the marker will tell the story of Antonio López and his descendants for the generations to come who visit the cemetery. Read the cemetery application here to learn more about the history we’ve been able to document so far.

Now, we need to submit the $1,875 payment for the marker by March 1. These heavy-duty, official markers do not come cheap! If you’re able to, please pitch in whatever you’re comfortable with so we can make this happen. Armando López or Eladio Barrera in San José can take your contribution. If you have questions, please reach out to them or use this form and I’ll relay your question or comment.

Once we have details on when to expect delivery later this year, we can start planning a marker dedication ceremony to celebrate all the hard work everyone has put into the cemetery beautification project over the past couple of years! Thanks!

Is it too late to contribute?

    1. Hi! Thanks for the interest in participating—no, it isn’t too late. Along with installing the historical marker (hopefully to be delivered in the next few months), future plans include a dedication ceremony (once large groups can get together safely again), a printed booklet with the cemetery’s story, and hopefully a plaque at Antonio’s gravesite with the poem he wrote, which used to be kept there in a wooden case that unfortunately fell to the elements.

If you’d like to contribute now, please contact my parents Eladio and Rosi Barrera of San José at 361-256-4187 to make a plan. Or, you could wait until we put out another “fund drive,” once we have a better idea of costs for those other subprojects. Up to you.

      Thanks again. Be well.
