The beautification project is full steam ahead! You’ll notice a few changes next time you come out to the cemetery. Last Friday and Saturday, several of the primos came out with heavy-equipment, chainsaws, and a lot of elbow grease to clear the entrance and fence line.
The crew included Tomas Benavides all the way from Houston; Francisco “Chico” Lopez from Corpus; Amado Saenz from Robstown; Lionel Garcia from Kingsville; Beto Peña and Pete Peña III from Alice; Rodolfo “Fito” Bazan from San Diego; Francisco “Pancho” Saenz from Benavides; and José Saenz, Mando Lopez, and Eladio Barrera from San José.

The bulldozer provided by José, as well as Chico and Fito’s tractors, helped make quick work of clearing the dense, overgrown brush and taking down the old barbed-wire fence. A hired crew came in to quickly install the new net-wire fencing along the south side, while the neighboring landowner had his cattle penned up. The primos intend to DIY the rest of the fencing slowly as time (and the heat) allows.
Also gone is a century’s worth of trash that had accumulated against the east fence. With everyone’s help, we’ll be able to keep the cemetery trash-free from now on.

You’ll also notice that the pipeline easement is now clearly marked with flags. More info on this to come—stay tuned!
